31 October 2013 The Phalaenopsis orchids at the Piet Vijverberg Nursery, with their three branches and unusually large number of buds, are now assessed from a distance by Asian employees. Images taken of every plant at the nursery are transmitted to Asia within only a few seconds, where an employee checks the plants for various characteristics and immediately sends back the results to the Netherlands. No more hand sorting

14 September 2012 PostNL has joined forces with Neopost, a sorting machine supplier to try to banish hand sorting altogether. Over the years, postal operators have worked on automating their sorting systems. Optical character recognition (OCR) is essential for sorting but not a watertight solution. Depending on the quality, 5% to 20% of mail still has to be sorted by hand. The solution devised by Neopost and PostNL is able to almost completely cancel out hand sorting.

In doing so, PostNL Parcels is following the example of the PostNL letter sorting centres, which had already outsourced the video coding of letters and flats to Asia. By making better use of the possibilities offered by video coding, this code is no longer needed to match a mail item with the information required for automatic sorting.
