PostNL's video-coding solution now also available to parcel companies

8 August 2011
Since June 2011, PostNL Parcels has had the video coding for all its sorting centres performed in the Philippines and Vietnam. In doing so, PostNL Parcels is following the example of the PostNL letter sorting centres, which had already outsourced the video coding of letters and flats to Asia. Tens of millions of parcels will now be coded in this way every year.

Video coders in Asia enter the parcel address details that the sorting machines are unable to read. Speed is of the essence as the details, transmitted as an image, have to be entered and sent back to the sorting centre in the Netherlands within just 18 seconds. Parcels can then be sorted automatically by machine.

Product-code entry too

A new aspect of the service involves entering the product codes for non pre-advised consignments. Here too the sorting machine is unable to read the codes that indicate, for example, that the parcel driver needs to request a signature on delivery or that the parcel may be left with a neighbour.

Outsourcing video coding creates greater flexibility, allowing operators to better accommodate peaks in the handling of parcels that have not been pre-advised.
